History

Cantemus is a mixed chamber choir made up of a small group of friends who meet to sing challenging, mainly unaccompanied music, covering a wide repertoire.  The choir was founded in 1988 by its then musical director, Dominic Cain, and the joy of making good music to a high standard has been such that the choir has maintained its preferred membership of twenty-five, retaining many of its accomplished original voices and attracting new young voices as opportunities have arisen over the years.

In the summer of 2001, Dominic was succeeded as musical director by Val Coleman who retired from the post in 2006.  Rebecca Ledgard directed the choir during 2007, leaving to take on a national role in music education for the young.  Since the beginning of 2008, Pam Price has held the post of musical director.

The choir travels to a wide range of venues from its base on the Stratford Road in Shirley, Solihull.  Concerts have been performed in many churches in and around Birmingham and Solihull, in Cheltenham during festival week, at the National Trust properties of Charlecote Park, near Stratford-upon-Avon, and Baddesley Clinton, near Solihull, for the Middleton Hall Trust, near Tamworth, and regularly at Christmas at the Church of Our Lady of the Wayside, Shirley, Solihull.

Affiliated to ‘Making Music’, the choir welcomes the opportunity to sing for trusts and charities.  Those that have benefited in the past include the National Trust, Amnesty International, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Marie Curie and the Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson at Temple Balsall, Solihull.
